How to convert VOB to MP4 from a DVD
Get the files off the disc first, then convert them here one part at a time.
- 1
Copy the VIDEO_TS folder
Put an unprotected disc, such as one you made, in a drive and copy the whole VIDEO_TS folder to your computer. The copy doubles as a backup in case the disc gets scratched later.
- 2
Pick the first movie part
Drop VTS_01_1.VOB (or the biggest VTS set) on the converter. Its size, duration and resolution appear, so you can tell a menu from the actual video.
- 3
Re-encode and save
Choose Re-encode and a quality level, then press Convert to MP4. Repeat for VTS_01_2.VOB and the other parts; each one saves as its own .mp4 file.
Why convert VOB files here
DVD video needs a full conversion, and this one runs on your own machine.
No 1 GB upload
A full VOB part can be a gigabyte. Upload sites make you wait for it to transfer and keep it on their servers for as long as the service decides; here the file never leaves your computer.
About a fifth of the size
Our 6-second DVD-style VOB test file was 790 KB and came out as a 165 KB H.264 MP4. Savings vary with the footage and the quality you pick.
DVD parts usually fit
DVDs split a title into parts of up to 1 GB, usually well under the practical limit of about 2 GB per file, so you rarely have to trim a VOB first.
Audio tracks survive
Discs often carry a second language or a commentary. Every audio track is kept, with AC3 or MP2 sound turned into AAC at 192 kbps.
Ways to convert DVD to MP4, compared
Which route fits depends on whether you already have the VOB files or only the disc.

Home DVDs worth turning into MP4
The best VOB to MP4 candidates are discs made by families and small studios.
Wedding videos
The videographer's DVD is often the only copy of the day. An MP4 can be backed up to cloud storage and shared with relatives who no longer own a player.
Recitals and graduations
Schools and dance studios still hand out DVDs. Convert the parts you care about and send a short MP4 to grandparents.
VHS tapes saved to DVD
Many old tapes were transferred onto DVD years ago. Moving them on to MP4 saves the footage before the disc itself wears out.
DVD camcorder discs
Camcorders that recorded straight to mini DVDs leave VOB files once the disc is finalized. Copy them off and convert each clip.
DVD recorder discs
Living-room DVD recorders wrote TV shows and home footage as VOB. After conversion they play in most media apps.
What's inside a VIDEO_TS folder
VIDEO_TS.VOB is the disc's main menu. Files ending in _0.VOB, such as VTS_01_0.VOB, are the menus of each title set. Skip both unless you want the menu loop.
The video itself sits in VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and so on. Each part holds at most 1 GB, so one long title is spread over several files. A second title, such as a bonus clip, starts again at VTS_02_1.VOB.
The IFO and BUP files next to them are navigation data, not video. They don't need converting. A VOB to MP4 conversion here leaves the disc and the copied folder unchanged.
VOB to MP4 mistakes with DVD files
Mistake: Converting VIDEO_TS.VOB and getting a few seconds of menu.
Do this instead: That file is the disc menu. Look for VTS_xx_1.VOB and its siblings; the main title is usually the set with the most and largest files.
Mistake: Stopping after VTS_01_1.VOB and missing the end.
Do this instead: A one-hour recording usually spans several parts. Convert _2, _3 and the rest too, then watch them in order or join them in a video editor.
Mistake: Copying VOB files from a store-bought movie.
Do this instead: Commercial discs are scrambled with CSS copy protection, and this converter does not decrypt anything. Use it only for discs you made or that were made for you.
Mistake: Picking 1080p to sharpen an old disc.
Do this instead: DVD is 480 or 576 lines tall and the converter never upscales, so higher sizes are greyed out. Keep Original, or choose 480p for a smaller PAL file.
Mistake: Hunting for the DVD subtitles in the MP4.
Do this instead: DVD subtitles are stored as pictures, which MP4 has no place for, so they are left out. Keep the VOB file if the subtitle track matters.
Privacy, cost and limits of this VOB converter
Stays on your computer
Your file is converted on your own device and is never uploaded to our servers. The converter is FFmpeg 5.1.4 built for WebAssembly, unmodified, and about 32 MB is fetched from jsDelivr on the first visit.
Free for every disc
Run VOB to MP4 on as many disc parts as you like, with no account and no watermark. Files are processed one at a time.
About 2 GB per file
The ceiling is browser memory. A 1.6 GB file converted in our tests and a 2.1 GB file failed, so a single DVD part is usually well within it.
No copy-protection removal
The tool reads plain VOB files only. It will not and cannot get around the CSS scrambling on commercial DVDs.
