How to convert TS to MP4

Nothing to install. Pick the recording and the converter works on it inside this tab.

  1. 1

Choose the .ts or .m2ts file

Drag it onto the page or browse for it. The size, duration and resolution appear first, so you can check it is the whole recording.

  2. 2

Leave Fast Copy on, or pick Re-encode

Fast Copy moves the streams into MP4 and converts only what MP4 players can't handle. Re-encode writes new H.264 at High, Medium or Small file quality, optionally scaled down to 1080p, 720p or 480p.

  3. 3

    Download the MP4

The file keeps its name and gets the .mp4 extension. You see the TS size next to the MP4 size and how many audio tracks were converted, plus a note if you chose Fast Copy and the video had to be re-encoded after all.

What this .ts to MP4 converter does with each stream

A transport stream is a wrapper. What matters is the video and audio inside it.

Compatible H.264 and HEVC pass straight through

OBS, HLS downloads and most IPTV services store H.264, sometimes HEVC. When the codec is compatible (8-bit 4:2:0 H.264, or HEVC), Fast Copy writes those frames into the MP4 as they are, so the picture does not change.

MPEG-2 TV recordings are fixed for you

Older broadcast recordings often carry MPEG-2 video, which many MP4 players reject. It is converted to H.264 automatically: the Fast Copy choice is skipped for those files and Quality and Resolution are shown instead.

AC3 and MP2 audio become AAC

TV channels broadcast AC3 or MP2 sound that phones and browsers often play silently. Each such track alone is turned into AAC at 192 kbps, while AAC or MP3 tracks and compatible video are still copied.

Every audio track survives

If OBS recorded your mic, game and desktop audio on separate tracks, all of them stay in the MP4 for your editor to use.

Often a bit smaller, same picture

A transport stream repeats timing and header data in every small packet. MP4 doesn't, so after Fast Copy the file is often a little lighter, with the same video when it was copied.

Where .ts recordings come from

Transport streams are what recorders and broadcasters write. These are the usual sources.

OBS and other screen recorders

Gameplay, webinars and tutorials recorded to .ts because after a crash or power cut the part already written usually still plays. Convert the finished capture before you edit or post it.

IPTV and DVB TV recordings

Set-top boxes, TV tuner cards and IPTV apps save programmes as .ts, often with MPEG-2 video or AC3 sound. Both are handled for you.

Downloaded live streams

HLS downloaders fetch a stream's short segments and join them into one .ts file. That single file converts like any other.

Blu-ray .m2ts files

The .m2ts files on a Blu-ray or AVCHD disc are transport streams too. The video and every audio track carry over; the disc's image subtitles do not.

Playing it on a phone or Windows PC

Phones, tablets, smart TVs and some built-in Windows apps refuse .ts files. An MP4 with H.264 and AAC opens on nearly all of them.

Importing into an editor

Some editors import TS without sound, or seek through it slowly because it has no index. The MP4 carries AAC audio and an index at the start of the file.

What is a TS file, and why won't it play everywhere?

TS stands for MPEG transport stream. It was designed for broadcasting, not for storing films: audio and video are cut into small fixed-size packets, and the timing information repeats all the way through. A receiver can tune in halfway and start playing, and a recording that is cut off still plays up to the point where it stopped. That is why TV, IPTV, HLS streaming and recorders such as OBS use it.

The same design makes .ts awkward on a computer. There is no index, so seeking is slow, and the audio is often AC3 or MP2, which many apps can't decode. TS is not a DVD format either: DVDs use VOB files. Converting TS to MP4 moves the same streams into a container with an index that players, editors and websites expect.

TS to MP4 conversion mistakes to avoid

  • Mistake: Converting a folder of HLS segments one by one and expecting a single video.

Do this instead: Segments are converted separately and never joined. Join them first with your stream downloader or FFmpeg, then convert the one .ts file.

  • Mistake: Picking the file while OBS is still recording.

Do this instead: Stop the recording and let OBS finish writing the file before you choose it here.

  • Mistake: Re-encoding an H.264 stream recording just to get MP4.

Do this instead: Fast Copy already gives a real MP4. Re-encoding 1080p runs at about real time, so a three-hour stream would take about three hours.

  • Mistake: Changing the extension from .ts to .mpeg or .mp4.

Do this instead: A new name leaves the transport stream inside. Players that rejected it before usually still do.

  • Mistake: Expecting Blu-ray subtitles in the converted .m2ts.

Do this instead: PGS subtitles are images, and MP4 has no place for them, so they are dropped. Keep the original if you need them.

Privacy, price and limits of this TS to MP4 tool

Your recording is not uploaded

Your file is converted on your own device and is never uploaded to our servers. That matters for private calls, meetings or anything else you captured on screen.

Free for any number of files

No account, no watermark and no daily cap. Files are converted one at a time; there is no batch queue.

About 2 GB per file, tested

The browser gives the converter a fixed amount of memory. A 1.6 GB file converted in our tests and a 2.1 GB file stopped with an out-of-memory message. Long streams above that size need FFmpeg on the desktop.

FFmpeg under the hood

The engine is FFmpeg 5.1.4 compiled to WebAssembly, about 32 MB, downloaded once from jsDelivr and then cached by your browser.
