How to convert 3GP to MP4

Three steps, all inside this browser tab.

  1. 1

Pick the .3gp or .3g2 file

Drop it on the box above or click to choose it. Before you start, the tool shows its size, duration and resolution.

  2. 2

Keep Fast Copy or choose Re-encode

Fast Copy is the default and fixes only what MP4 can't carry, such as AMR audio or H.263 video. Re-encode rebuilds the whole clip as H.264 at High, Medium or Small file quality.

  3. 3

    Download the MP4

The file keeps its original name, now ending in .mp4. The result screen compares the old and new sizes and, in Fast Copy, says if the video had to be re-encoded and how many audio tracks were converted.

Why this 3GP to MP4 converter fixes old phone clips

AMR audio becomes AAC

Feature phones often recorded sound in AMR, a speech codec most MP4 players skip. It is converted to AAC at 192 kbps automatically, even in Fast Copy.

H.263 video becomes H.264

The oldest clips use H.263, which MP4 players don't accept, so it is converted to H.264. MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 video are copied untouched when the codec is compatible, so they lose nothing.

No upload, no server queue

The conversion runs in this tab with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Family clips from an old phone never go to anyone's server.

Unlimited conversions

Convert as many files as you like, one at a time, up to about 2 GB each. Upload sites keep your file on their servers; limits and retention depend on the service.

Who needs 3GP to MP4

Old Nokia and flip-phone clips

Videos copied off a feature phone's memory card, often 176x144 or 320x240 with AMR sound. Converted, they play with audio on a current phone or laptop.

Video messages from MMS backups

3GP was the usual format for video messages. Clips exported from an old message backup convert the same way.

CDMA phones and .3g2 files

Phones on CDMA networks saved .3g2 instead of .3gp. The converter accepts both extensions.

Editing in a current video editor

Editors that refuse AMR audio or H.263 video take the H.264 and AAC MP4 this tool writes.

Sharing with family

Messaging and social apps expect MP4. The output is web-optimized, so it starts playing before it has fully downloaded.

3GP vs MP4: same family, different codecs

3GP is a cut-down member of the MP4 family. Both use the same base file structure, which is why the files look alike and why a renamed 3GP sometimes half works.

The difference is inside. A 3GP from an older phone usually holds H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR audio, chosen to fit slow 3G networks and tiny screens. Players and editors today expect H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio.

So the conversion is mostly about the sound and, for the oldest clips, the video codec. When the video is already MPEG-4 Part 2 or 8-bit H.264, Fast Copy usually keeps it as it is and rebuilds only what has to change.

3GP to MP4 mistakes with old phone video

  • Mistake: Renaming the .3gp file to .mp4

Do this instead: The extension changes but the AMR audio and H.263 video don't, so the file may play silent or not at all. Convert it so the streams change too.

  • Mistake: Expecting a sharper picture after conversion

Do this instead: Converting keeps the detail the phone recorded and can't add any. The tool never upscales: Re-encode offers only sizes below the source, so tiny clips stay at Original.

  • Mistake: Re-encoding a clip that only needs Fast Copy

Do this instead: Fast Copy already converts AMR and H.263 where needed and copies the rest. Re-encoding compresses the video a second time, so use it for a smaller file or when the target device can't play the MPEG-4 Part 2 video.

  • Mistake: Picking Small file for a low-quality clip

Do this instead: Old phone video has little detail to spare. If you do re-encode, choose High (CRF 18) to keep what is there.

  • Mistake: Closing the tab mid-conversion

Do this instead: The work happens in the tab, so closing or reloading it stops the conversion. Wait for the download button.

Free, private, and the limits we tested

Free, unlimited conversions

No sign-up, no watermark and no daily cap. Convert one file at a time, as often as you want.

Runs on your device

The first visit downloads the converter once, about 32 MB from jsDelivr. After that it loads from your browser cache, and your videos stay on your device.

Tested limits

About 2 GB per file: in our tests a 1.6 GB file converted and a 2.1 GB file ran out of browser memory. We tested Chrome on a laptop; phone browsers are untested.
