How MKV to MP4 handles your data: videos are converted on your own device and never reach our servers.

Last updated: 2026-10-24

MKV to MP4 (mkv-to-mp4.org) converts video and audio files to MP4, MOV, WebM, WMV or AVI inside your web browser. This policy explains what information the site touches, why, who else is involved and how long anything is kept. "We" and "us" mean the team behind mkv-to-mp4.org.

The short version

  • Your files never leave your device. The converter runs in your browser, so we don't receive, see or store the files you convert.
  • We don't ask who you are. There is nothing to sign up for and no email address to give.
  • We only keep the ordinary request logs every website has, plus anonymous visit counts.

Your files

When you pick a file, your browser reads it locally and hands it to the converter (FFmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly) running in the same tab. The converted file is created in your browser's memory and saved straight to your device when you download it. No part of the file is sent to mkv-to-mp4.org or to anyone else. The same goes for a cover image you add to an audio file. Closing or reloading the tab clears it from memory.

To run, your browser downloads the converter program itself from the jsDelivr content network the first time you use it. That request contains no information about your files.

Emails. If you write to us, we keep the conversation so we can answer it.

What the site records on its own

  • Request logs. Our host processes your IP address, browser type and the pages you open, to deliver the site and to block attacks.
  • Visit statistics. We count visits with Plausible Analytics. It sets no cookies and stores nothing that identifies you; we only see totals such as page views, countries and referring sites.

Cookies and local storage

We set no cookies. Your browser's local storage remembers your light or dark theme choice and the converter settings you last used. Clearing your site data removes them.

Outside services

A few outside services keep the site running. Each gets only what its job needs:

  • Cloudflare: hosts the site; like any web host it sees your IP address when you connect, but never your videos.
  • jsDelivr: delivers the converter program (ffmpeg.wasm) to your browser; like any download it sees your IP address, never your videos.
  • Plausible Analytics: counts page visits without cookies and without identifying you.

We disclose information only when the law requires it or when it is needed to stop fraud or protect someone's safety. We don't sell personal information and we don't share it for advertising.

How long we keep things

  • Your files: never stored by us. They stay on your device.
  • Request logs: kept by our host for a short period for security, then deleted.

Your rights

Email us and we will tell you what, if anything, we hold about you, give you a copy, fix it or delete it. We reply within 30 days. Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK or California), you may have further rights, including complaining to your data protection authority.

Children

MKV to MP4 is not meant for children under 13. Because we collect no names, emails or files, we hold nothing that could identify a child.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS only. Since conversion happens on your device, the safety of your files depends on your own device and browser, not on our servers.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, so does the date at the top. If a change ever meant files would leave your device, we would say so clearly on the converter before it happened.
