Terms of Service

The rules for using MKV to MP4: what the converter does, what you may convert, and what we are and aren't responsible for.

Last updated: 2026-10-24

These terms are an agreement between you and the team that runs MKV to MP4 at mkv-to-mp4.org ("we", "us"). By using the site you accept them, together with our Privacy Policy. If you don't, please don't use the site.

What the site does

MKV to MP4 converts video and audio files to MP4, MOV, WebM, WMV or AVI inside your browser. The conversion runs on your own device with FFmpeg, an open source program (see Open Source Licenses). Most files are repackaged without touching the picture or sound; some have to be re-encoded, which takes longer and can change quality or file size slightly. Check the result before you delete the original.

Free to use

The converter is free, with no sign-up and no limit on the number of files. How large a file you can convert depends on your device's memory and your browser, not on us. We may change or pause the service at any time.

Files you convert

Convert only files you own or have the right to use. Because conversion happens on your device, we never receive your files and can't see, recover or delete them for you. You keep every right you have to them, and the converted MP4 is yours in the same way the original was.

Changing a file's format doesn't change who owns its content. Don't use the site to copy or share material in ways its owner hasn't allowed.

Things you must not do

  • Break the law or anyone else's rights while using the site.
  • Scrape the site, overload it, probe it for weaknesses or try to reach data that isn't yours.
  • Copy the site's design or text, or present the service as your own.

Open source software

The converter is FFmpeg built by the ffmpeg.wasm project and comes under its own licenses, including the GNU General Public License. Those licenses, not these terms, govern your rights to that software. Details and source code are on the Open Source Licenses page.

Our content

The site's design, text and logo belong to us. Don't reuse them without our permission.

Changes, suspension and ending access

We can change, pause or stop any part of the site. If you break these terms, we may block your access without notice.

No guarantees

The site is provided "as is" and "as available". We don't promise that every file will convert, that the site will always work or be free of errors, or that a result will suit your purpose. Keep your original files until you have checked the converted ones.

Our liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses such as lost profits, lost data or lost opportunities. Our total liability for any claim connected with the site is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or USD 50, whichever is more. Nothing here removes rights that the law in your country gives you and that can't be waived.

Changes to these terms

When these terms change, so does the date at the top. Using the site after that means you accept the new version.
